July 15th, 2020, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey issued a statewide emergency proclamation that face masks are required effective July 16, at 5:00 P.M. Individuals are required to wear a face mask or a face covering when in public and when in close contact with others. The amended Safer at Home order is in response to the rising number of COVID – 19 cases and deaths across Alabama, and extends until July 31st.
The face covering is to cover nostrils and mouth at all times when within 6 feet of a person from another household and when:
- In an indoor space open to the general public
- In a vehicle operated by a transportation service, or
- At an outdoor public space where 10 or more people are gathered.
All information regarding the amended order as well as resources and PSAs can be found at the office of the governor website.
The face covering requirement is subject to exceptions, which can be found in the official amendment.
Face coverings may be factory made, homemade or improvised from household items. For instructions on how to make a face covering at home, see the CDC recommendations.
